What are all those green books? At least they’re not blue (the PhD theses – I know nobody reads them in print like that but would be sad to see them disposed of…) Will ask some friendly blogging librarians to post a comment here and enlighten us!

Don’t worry – we keep theses in perpetuity (although they are also starting to be digitised by the British Library).

Despite appearances i.e. the fact that the stuff is in a skip, we are in fact recycling this material which consists of a run of Chemical Abstracts which haven’t been consulted in years but were cluttering up our closed stack.

thanks, Steve – I’m sure there are academic libraries up and down the country doing similar things. I probably only consult paper journals once or twice a year – online access via the PC is the future.

I should also have added that we consulted, and obtained the agreement of, the primary ex-users of this material before proceeding with the disposal (including the Dean of Science & Engineering)!
