interesting points - I'd better pull my finger out - I've only got 55 followers.

What top tip would you give an information professional/librarian wanting to develop a social media profile?

That's sort of true. Lets take Twitter as an example I have a 1000 followers which isn't that many really and follow 600 people. I'm not going to be engaging with all of those followers at the same time, because they're following me for different reasons. Just like I'm following other people for different reasons. There are a core group that I always engage with and I imagine this is the same for corporate entities, they might have 1000's of followers but if you were to look at the ones they actively engaged with it might not be that many.

Either that or they don't engage at all! :)

Hi James - I guess you're right but I think it also depends on whether we are talking about individuals or organisations. An individual can probably engage with his/her online followers when they are less than 100 but what happens when someone or a corporate entity has hundreds of thousands of followers? I would have thought there was too much noise for real conversations to take place.

Martin I don't believe you can put a number on a social media sweet spot as it is a combination of a number of things and will depend both on your circumstances (what you're trying to achieve, the organisation you work for etc)

I found this presentation useful in understanding the social media sweet spot http://www.slideshare.net/wordbiz/finding-your-social-media-sweet-spot-6710667

I think the major change for effective use of the social web is the ability to build and maintain a trusted network. I've heard the phrase 'sweet spot' used when your personal network becomes big enough to be useful to you but not to big you are unable to engage with it properly.

Closing libraries or reducing their hours and services is a big mistake.
I have used libraries since I could read as I couldn't afford to buy books.
My local library, Thetford, Norfolk, is brilliant and a great place to go.
If the council wants to use volunteers, then perhaps councils should also use volunteers and save even more money.
