Yesterday, Ericsson released its annual Mobility Report which is a good source of global statistics on the state of the cellular market with forecasts. However, something jumped out at me in their short section on Internet of Things (IoT) connected devices. If I’m reading their forecast right, they predict approximately 14 billion connected IoT devices globally by 2020 (this excludes smart phones). This is at the low end of estimates from other forecasters as my chart shows. I’ve tried to use the latest forecasts from these firms and, from my rather brief look at their methodologies, believe they all exclude smart phones (feel free to contact me if I have made any errors on this front). For a broad collection of IoT statistics see my post HERE.
So who do you believe? Beats me but the wide gap between Ericsson and Cisco is interesting. The analyst firms seem rather more consistent.
