Platform Building by Data-Driven Startups in the UK

uk data driven companies

The purpose of this paper is to develop an understanding of the business models being deployed by data-driven startups in the UK. The focus is on those companies developing platforms as part of their business model strategy. The core data in this research comes from two specialist databases of startups and is based on a sample of 100 companies taken from a larger pool of 1,227 firms. The findings emerging from the analysis of the sample companies highlights the importance of platforms as part of the business model strategies for these startups. It demonstrates a correlation between the types of platforms being built and the network effects that the firms are seeking to harness. This is the first quantitative study of the platform building strategies of UK-based startups that are using data at the core of their business models.
